Prep the pumpkin and pick your light side

Choose a tall, round pumpkin with one smooth, wide face for the figure. Have an adult cut a lid or a bottom access hole so you can reach inside and drop in an LED light later. Scrape the inner wall behind your design down to about one inch thick so the light glows evenly. A thinner wall makes the many small bone cuts far easier to control.

Transfer the design and mark bridges

Tape your stencil flat against the smooth face and poke the outlines with a pin or transfer tool. Before you cut anything, mark small skin bridges between the skull, ribs, arms, and legs so the pieces stay connected. Plan those bridges at the natural joints, like between the raised arm and the head. This keeps the whole figure from sagging or breaking loose.

Carve the round eye sockets first

Start with the two round eye holes and the little nose using a fine detail knife or a small drill-style tool. Cut slowly and let the round shape guide short, connected strokes rather than one big push. These tiny openings set the cute expression, so take your time and keep them symmetrical. Doing them first means the face area is still fully supported by surrounding skin.

Open the ribcage and arms next

Work down from the skull into the ribs, cutting each curved bone as its own slot. Do the raised arm and the curled arm across the chest one segment at a time, leaving thin skin bridges where bones meet. Clear each cut piece gently by pushing inward so you do not tear neighboring sections. The upper body carries the most detail, so finishing it while the base is solid keeps things stable.

Cut the legs and feet last

Save the short leg bones and feet at the bottom for the very end, since that uncut skin has been bracing everything above. Open them from the top of each leg down toward the feet. Keep small bridges at the ankles so the little feet do not drop out. Once these are through, ease out any remaining plugs and tidy the edges with your detail knife.

Light it and photograph

Set a battery LED puck or string inside and never use an open candle near these thin cut bones. Test the glow in a dark room and rotate the light until each bone segment is rimmed evenly. If any area looks dim, shave a little more from the inner wall behind it. Photograph at dusk so the warm interior glow reads against the fading sky.
