Pick your spot and prep the pumpkin

Choose a pumpkin with one flat, smooth side free of deep ribs, since the shape is tall and skinny. An adult should cut a lid or a base-access hole and scoop the inside until the wall on your carving side is about one inch thick. A thinner wall is easier to cut cleanly and lets more light through. Wipe the surface dry before you transfer your design.

Transfer the state outline

Print or draw a Delaware silhouette sized to fit vertically on your smooth patch. Tape it flat, then poke closely spaced dots along the whole outline with a pin or awl. Remove the paper and connect the dots lightly with a washable marker so you can see the full torch shape before cutting. Double check the shape stands upright with the rounded northern edge at the top.

Carve the curved top first

Using a small serrated carving saw, start at the rounded northern boundary at the top of the shape. Keep the blade perpendicular to the surface and use gentle, even strokes. Working the top first means any accidental pressure lands on solid, uncut material below instead of on freed edges. Take your time on the curve so it stays smooth.

Work down the straight sides

Continue cutting down both mostly straight sides, letting them widen slightly as they rise toward the top just like the real state outline. Saw slowly and rotate the pumpkin rather than twisting your wrist. Support the piece with your free hand so it does not snap loose early. Save the flat bottom edge for last.

Free the single piece and clean up

Cut the flat base last, then gently push the whole silhouette inward or outward to release it in one piece. Trim any ragged edges with a paring tool for a crisp outline. For an extra glow, lightly shave the inside edge of the opening at an angle so more wall thickness catches the light.

Light it and photograph

Set a battery LED tea light or puck light inside, never a candle, and place it low so it fills the tall cutout evenly. Test in a dark room and reposition the light until the whole state shape glows uniformly. Display on a flat step or ledge and shoot at dusk for that warm orange glow against the fall background.
