Prep the pumpkin and transfer the design

Pick a tall, smooth pumpkin with an even face and cut a lid from the bottom or back so the front stays intact. Scrape the inside wall of the carving area down to about one inch so light can pass through evenly. Tape your bunny stencil flat to the front and poke the main outlines with a pin: the ear shapes, the eyes, the nose, and the fur boundaries. Mark where each whisker will run so you can cut them with confidence later.

Map your light levels before cutting

Study your stencil and decide what stays dark, what glows, and what cuts through. Keep the eyes and the deepest fur shadows as untouched skin. Plan the cheeks, chest, and inner ears as shaved areas for a soft glow. Sketch these zones lightly with a washable marker so you are not guessing once the tool is in your hand.

Shave the fur in radiating strokes

Using a ribbon or shading loop tool, peel away the orange skin in short strokes that follow the direction the fur grows. Work from the nose outward across the cheeks and down the chest, keeping the thinnest shave on the brightest areas. Leave narrow ridges of skin between strokes so the fur keeps its texture and structure. Go slowly and check the glow by holding the pumpkin up to a lamp as you build depth.

Deepen the inner ears and bright highlights

The inner ears and the top of the head catch the most light, so shave those thinnest without breaking all the way through. Keep a thin skin bridge across each ear so the shape stays supported and does not sag. Blend the edges where bright meets dark by feathering your strokes rather than leaving a hard line. Step back often to make sure the ears still read as tall and upright.

Cut the whiskers and refine the eyes

Each whisker is a single confident stroke with a fine detail knife, cut slightly deeper than the surrounding fur so it flares brightest. Pull each line in one smooth motion out from the muzzle and do not overwork it. Leave the eyes at near-full depth so they stay dark and glossy, adding only a tiny shaved catchlight if you want a spark of life. An adult should handle all knife work here.

Light it and take your photo

Drop in a steady LED puck or string, not a flickering candle, so the gradients read as smooth fur rather than jumpy shadow. Warm white light gives the best orange glow. Set the pumpkin on a porch step at dusk and shoot slightly off to the side so the whiskers catch the light. If any area looks too dark, shave a little more from the inside wall behind it.
