Pick a small round pumpkin and plan the light

Choose a small, evenly round pumpkin with a smooth front panel wide enough for the whole lizard, since the gecko needs a bit of horizontal room for its outstretched legs. Wipe the surface clean and dry it. Because this is a single low cutout, cut a lid on top or a service hole in the back so you can reach the inside. A back hole keeps the front face uninterrupted and looks tidier on a porch rail.

Scoop and thin the carving wall

Scrape out the seeds and pulp, then thin the front wall where the design sits to about one inch thick. A thinner wall is much easier to saw through and lets more light escape. Use a sturdy scraper and take your time so you do not gouge through by accident. An even wall thickness gives you consistent, clean cuts later.

Transfer your gecko stencil

Tape your gecko pattern flat against the front, snipping the paper edges so it hugs the curve without wrinkles. Poke the outline with a pushpin or transfer wheel, spacing dots close together on the tight curves of the tail spiral and the toe tips. Peel the paper and connect the dots with a marker if it helps you see the shape. Double check that the whole lizard is one continuous outline before you cut.

Cut the tiny toe pads first

Start with the smallest, riskiest details: the splayed toes on each foot. Use a fine detail saw and make slow, straight up-and-down strokes, letting the blade do the work rather than forcing it. Cutting these little pads while the rest of the pumpkin is still solid keeps the wall stable and reduces the chance of a toe tearing. Clear each pad fully before moving to the next.

Open the body, then the curled tail last

Work inward to the wider body and legs, removing those larger sections next so the pumpkin stays rigid as long as possible. Save the spiral tail for your final cut, following the curve in short controlled passes and turning the pumpkin instead of twisting your wrist. Big and curved openings weaken the wall, so doing them last protects everything you already carved. Push cut pieces out gently from the inside.

Light it and photograph on the rail

Drop in a warm-white LED puck or a battery tea light; skip real flame so nothing scorches the thin toe cuts. Set the pumpkin on a porch step or rail and check the glow from a few feet back. If any spot looks dim, scrape a little more from the inside wall behind it. Shoot at dusk so the warm light reads against the darker background.
