   Cut the body and crest, keep the bridges

   Pierce out the main body of the chameleon and the open spaces between the spiky back crest. Cut the larger openings in stages, removing small sections at a time rather than one big piece. If a strip feels fragile, cut around it last and support it with your free hand.

   With most of the design open, carefully cut the curled spiral tail. Follow the coil in short strokes, turning the pumpkin instead of forcing the blade around the curve. Leave a small connecting bridge at the center of the spiral if it feels weak, which keeps the coil from tearing free. Take your time here, since this is the star detail and the thinnest part of the carving.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a battery LED puck or string light inside and place the pumpkin on your step. Check that the eye, toes, and tail spiral all glow evenly, and trim any ragged edges from the inside for a cleaner line. Photograph it at dusk when the warm light contrasts against the darker background. Keep a spare LED handy in case the first one is too dim.
