   Start with the thin gaps between the tail segments and the narrow spaces between the legs while the pumpkin is still rigid. Push each cut piece gently inward or outward and lift it away clean.

   Open the body and claws

   Once the small cuts are done, move to the larger shapes: the rounded body, the pincer claws, and the curl of the tail. Cut these fully through so they glow brightest. Support the surrounding rind with your free hand as you finish each opening so nothing tears. Save the single biggest opening for the very end to keep the wall stable as long as possible.

   Clean the edges and add glow

   Trim the inside edges of each cutout at a slight outward bevel so more light escapes and the shapes read sharp. Brush away loose bits and dry the cut edges. Set a battery LED light or two inside, not a candle, since the many thin bridges and the enclosed shell make an open flame a fire risk. Bright warm LEDs make the stinger and claws blaze against the dark shell.

   Stage and photograph

   Place the finished jack-o-lantern on a step or porch where the cutouts face your walkway. Turn the LEDs to their brightest warm setting and shoot in low evening light so the glowing scorpion pops. A dark backdrop like a door makes the contrast stronger. Coat the cut edges with a little petroleum jelly to slow drying and keep the design crisp for a few extra nights.
