Pick a tall pumpkin and clean it out

Choose a large, evenly round pumpkin with a smooth front face so the web frame reads clearly. Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top, which keeps the stem intact and makes it easy to set the pumpkin over an LED later. Scoop the inside and scrape the carving wall down to about one inch thick so the background cuts release cleanly. A thinner wall behind the spider will also let the finished glow spread evenly.

Transfer the spider and web pattern

Print or draw a spiky spider with big cartoon eyes centered inside a round or hexagonal web frame. Tape the pattern flat and poke tracing dots along every spike tip, the eyes, the web lines, and the outer frame. Mark clearly which zones are background to remove and which lines stay as raised rind, since it is easy to cut the wrong side on a silhouette. Take a photo of the pattern before you pull it off so you have a reference.

Score the outline and protect the spikes

Use a small detail saw or a craft knife to lightly score around the spider body, every bristle, and each web strand before you cut anything through. Cutting close but not touching the spike tips is the whole game here, so go slow and leave a hair of margin on each point. If a spike feels fragile, leave a tiny bridge of rind connecting it to the body so it cannot snap off. An adult should handle every sharp tool, and keep your free hand behind the blade.

Remove the background in small sections

Cut out the glowing background between the spider and the web frame one small pocket at a time rather than in one big sweep. Working in sections keeps the surrounding rind stiff so the spike edges do not flex and tear. Angle the blade slightly outward so the openings flare toward the inside, which lets more light pass. Rotate the pumpkin often so you are always cutting toward yourself at a comfortable angle.

Detail the eyes and open the frame last

Cut the two round eyes as clean holes so they read as bright dots against the dark body. Then finish the largest background openings near the outer web frame, since these remove the most material and weaken the shell. Save any wide bottom opening for the very end. Test fit your light and trim any spike that is casting a muddy shadow.

Light it and photograph

Set a bright battery LED inside, ideally one on the cool-to-warm warm setting, since candles are a fire risk and their flicker washes out fine spikes. Place the pumpkin on a porch or step at dusk and check that both the spider outline and the web strands read sharply from a few feet away. If the center looks too hot and blows out detail, move the LED lower or add a second dim light off to one side. Snap your photo while there is still a little blue in the sky for the best contrast.
