   Plan and transfer the pattern

   Pick a tall pumpkin with a broad, smooth front panel so the fan web has room to spread.    Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top, so the stem and web point stay intact. Scoop the insides and thin the carving wall on the front to about one inch. A thinner wall makes the fine spider legs and narrow panels far easier to cut cleanly. Even out the inside so light spreads evenly across all the web cells.

   Cut the outer web cells first

   Start at the outermost triangular panels and cut those all the way through with a fine saw. Working outer to inner keeps each spoke rib supported by uncut pumpkin on both sides while you go. Take the panels one at a time and leave the thin spoke ribs untouched between them. Keep your non-cutting hand clear of the blade and let the saw do the work with steady strokes.

   Work inward toward the center

   Move row by row toward the central point at the top, opening each concentric cell as you reach it. The panels get smaller near the center, so switch to your smallest saw or a detail blade. Leave the narrow spoke ribs as continuous dark lines so the fan shape reads clearly. Cut the small connector web strands near the spider last, since those tiny bridges are the most fragile.

   Carve the hanging spider

   Cut the spider body as a solid glowing shape and open small gaps between its legs so they stand out. Keep each leg attached to the body and leave thin rind bridges where legs would otherwise float free. For the fine detail lines on the body, peel just the skin instead of cutting through. Give the spider a dark rind gap above it so it looks like it is dangling from the web point.

   Light it and photo it

   Drop in a bright LED puck or a couple of battery tealights, never a flame near thin ribs. Set the pumpkin on an elevated surface, like a shelf or stand, so the spider hangs near eye level. Turn off the room lights and check that every web cell glows evenly. Adjust the light position if the spider area looks dim, then take your photo in the dark for the best contrast.
