Webster the Waiting Web Spider

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

   Prep and open the pumpkin

Pick a tall pumpkin with a broad, smooth front face for the web. Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top so the stem stays intact and the display sits flat. Scoop the walls on the carving face down to about one inch thick using a sturdy scraper, and scrape a little extra where the web will glow. A thinner wall lets the peeled areas light up without cutting all the way through.

2. 2

   Transfer the web and spider

Tape your spiderweb pattern across the front, letting it curve with the pumpkin, and center the spider a bit off to one side. Poke through the lines with a pin or transfer tool to mark both the strands and the spider outline. Step back and check that the concentric rings and spokes read clearly before you cut. A dark marker can connect any faint dots.

3. 3

   Score all the web lines

With a small detail knife, lightly trace along every web strand and the spider body to set clean edges. These strands will stay as raised skin, so cut just deep enough to define them, not through the wall. Keeping the spokes and rings scored first gives you crisp borders when you start peeling. Take your time on the curved ring segments so they stay smooth.

4. 4

Peel the outer web sections first

Using a shallow gouge or lino tool, remove only the orange skin in the spaces between the strands, starting with the wide outer segments. Peel down to the pale flesh so those areas glow dim, and leave the scored strands standing proud. Working the big outer sections first builds your rhythm before the tight center. Keep the depth even so the whole web lights consistently.

5. 5

Shade the spider and finish the center spokes

Peel the spider body and legs a touch lighter than the web spaces so it stands out as a brighter shape, and leave a few darker skin lines for the leg segments. Save the delicate center spokes for last, since the small triangles between them are the most fragile. Clean each little wedge with light, controlled strokes and a fresh blade. If a spoke feels thin, leave a hair more skin rather than cutting through.

6. 6

Light it and photograph at dusk

Drop in one or two battery LED lights, warm white or amber, and avoid candles so the thin walls do not scorch. Rotate the lights until the whole web glows evenly and the spider reads brightest. Photograph in the blue light just after sunset for that porch glow. Rub cut edges with a little petroleum jelly to slow drying and keep the strands sharp.
