Hairy tarantula

A big-bodied spider with thick, furry legs. Cut the body and legs as outlines, then scrape short strokes along every leg for hair. The scraping is what sells it, so use a lot of small strokes rather than a few long ones.

Dangling spider

A spider hanging from a single thread, usually below a web or the stem. Cut the thread as a thin slit from the top of the pumpkin and the spider as a solid shape at its end. Because the spider hangs in an opening, cut it as an island with a bridge, or scrape the web behind it.

Spider web

A radial web, on its own or with a spider in one corner. Cut the spokes and rings as thin lines through the wall, working from the center out, and leave the spaces between them solid. An off-center web with a torn edge looks more real than a perfect one.

Simple spider cutout

A round body with eight legs, cut through. Make the legs thicker than looks right, at least half an inch, and bend each one at a joint so it looks like a spider rather than a sun. The body can be two overlapping circles for a head and abdomen.

Spider pumpkin carving FAQ

What is the easiest spider pumpkin design?
A single spider cut through the front: two circles for the body and eight bent legs. Keep every leg at least half an inch wide. Put it slightly off center, as if it is crawling up the pumpkin, and it looks intentional.
How do I carve a spider web?
Draw a dot in the center, then six to eight spokes out to the edge, then rings connecting the spokes. Cut each line as a narrow slit with a thin saw, working from the center outward so the spokes support the rings while you work.
How do I stop spider legs from breaking off?
Make them wide, bend them at a joint, and angle the knife inward so each leg is thicker on the inside of the wall than on the outside. If a leg still breaks, pin it back with a toothpick from the inside.
What is the best light for a spider pumpkin?
Purple or green. Both give the web a spooky glow and make a dark spider silhouette stand out. White works if you want the web to look like real silk.
Are the spider pumpkin stencils free?
Yes. Enter your email on a linked stencil page to unlock its free printable PDF. Print on letter or A4 paper and adjust the scale to your pumpkin. Related stencils may differ from the inspiration images in this gallery.
