Arched and hissing black cat
The classic Halloween cat: back arched, tail up, mouth open. It is one silhouette cut, so it suits a first-time carver. Keep the legs at least an inch wide where they meet the body, and cut the tail as a gentle curve rather than a thin whip so it does not snap.

Cat and moon
A sitting or walking cat in front of a crescent or full moon. Cut the moon all the way through and leave the cat as solid pumpkin in front of it, so the cat reads as a dark shape against the glow. This is the easiest way to get a dramatic result from two cuts.

Witch's cat
A cat in a pointed hat or riding a broom. The hat is a big triangle that is easy to cut, and it turns any sitting-cat silhouette into a Halloween scene. Cut the hat brim as a thin slit so it stays attached.

Big cats
Lions, tigers, leopards and cheetahs. These are portrait carves: scrape the mane or spots as texture and cut through only for the eyes and the highlights on the muzzle. A tall pumpkin gives a lion's mane room to spread.

Cat pumpkin carving FAQ
- What is the easiest cat pumpkin to carve?
- An arched black cat silhouette. Trace the outline, cut it out as one shape, and you are done. The only places to be careful are the legs and tail, which should stay at least an inch wide so they do not break as the pumpkin softens.
- How do I carve a cat silhouette so the cat looks dark?
- Reverse the cut. Instead of cutting the cat out, cut away the area around it: a moon behind, or a window frame. The cat stays as solid pumpkin and shows as a black shape against the glowing background, which is how most of the cat-and-moon designs here work.
- How do I carve whiskers and fur without breaking the pumpkin?
- Do not cut them through. Use a linoleum cutter, a clay loop or the tip of a peeler to scrape the skin off in thin lines. The scraped lines glow orange while the rest stays dark, and the wall stays solid.
- How do I make the cat's eyes glow?
- Cut the eyes fully through as two almond shapes or two slits, and keep every other opening smaller. Because the eyes are the biggest holes they get the most light. A green or yellow LED behind them is a classic touch.
- Are the cat pumpkin stencils free?
- Yes. Enter your email on a linked stencil page to unlock its free printable PDF. Print on letter or A4 paper and adjust the scale to your pumpkin. Related stencils may differ from the inspiration images in this gallery.
