Graveyard and haunted scenes with bats

Bats above headstones, a castle gate or a haunted house. The bats are small repeated cutouts across the top, the moon is the main light, and the buildings stay solid with windows cut through. Sketch the whole scene before the first cut so the bats do not crowd the roofline.

Bat pumpkin carving FAQ

What is the easiest bat pumpkin to carve?
A single bat silhouette with wings spread, cut all the way through. Draw it with a wide body and rounded wing scallops, cut the body first and then work outward along each wing. Two of them on one pumpkin looks like a flock with almost no extra effort.
How do I carve a swarm of bats without the pumpkin collapsing?
Keep at least an inch of pumpkin between each bat and make the bats near the top smaller. Small openings spread across a wide area are much stronger than one large one. If you want a big moon too, cut the moon in the center and keep the bats to the sides.
How do I make bat wings look sharp?
Cut the scalloped bottom edge of each wing as a series of short inward curves, and finish each wing in a point. Angling the knife slightly outward at the tips makes the points look sharper when the light comes through.
What is the best light for a bat pumpkin?
Warm yellow for a moonlit scene, so the moon reads as a moon. For a single bat silhouette, purple or orange gives a Halloween glow that shows off the wing outline.
Are the bat pumpkin stencils free?
Yes. Enter your email on a linked stencil page to unlock its free printable PDF. Print on letter or A4 paper and adjust the scale to your pumpkin. Related stencils may differ from the inspiration images in this gallery.
