Keep the peel shallow and even so the body still stays clearly darker than the bright wings. You can also leave the body fully uncut for a harder silhouette.

   Now cut through the large angular wing sections that surround the bat, working from the innermost shapes outward toward the wing tips. Make relief cuts inside big panels and remove them in smaller pieces so you never stress the connectors. Keep steady pressure and let the saw do the work rather than forcing it. These full cutouts are the brightest part of the design and frame the dark bat sharply.

   Light it and check from a distance

   Drop in an LED puck or string light, never a candle, and set the pumpkin at eye level. Step back several paces to confirm the dark bat reads as a crisp silhouette against the amber wing glow. If any wing section looks dim, thin its inner wall a little more from the back. Wipe the cut edges and photograph it against a dark backdrop at dusk for the best contrast.
