   Plan the bat's bridges first

   Before cutting, decide where the bat stays attached. Leave at least one wing tip, ideally both, joined to the inner curve of the crescent by a short strip of uncut skin.    Carve the bat detail, then open the moon last

   Cut the tight bat curves and wing scallops first with a small saw, keeping firm slow strokes and your free hand clear of the blade. Once the fine work is done, cut the large crescent opening as the final step so the big hole does not weaken the shell while you work the details. Remove the moon plug gently and confirm the bat island is still bridged. Ease any rough edges with the blade tip.

   Light it and take the photo

   Set a battery LED or a string of warm LEDs inside, never a candle near the thin bat bridges. Position the light low and slightly behind so the crescent floods bright and the bat reads as a solid shadow. Shoot at dusk for the sunset glow seen in the concept image. Rub a little petroleum jelly on cut edges to slow drying.
