Perched owl

An owl sitting on a branch, often against a moon. Cut the moon through as the main light source and keep the owl solid in front of it, with the eyes cut through so they glow. The branch is a scraped line across the bottom.

Spread-wing owl

An owl in flight with wings open. The wings are wide fans of feathers, so cut every other feather through and leave the rest solid. That alternating pattern glows like real plumage and keeps the wings strong.

Feathered portrait

A detailed owl with layered feathers, a barred face and a hooked beak. Scrape the feathers as overlapping scallops from the bottom up, cut through only for the eyes and the beak highlight, and use a peeler to lighten the face disc.

Wide-eyed round owl

A plump owl with huge eyes, a small beak and ear tufts. Cut the eyes as two large circles, leave a thin ring of pumpkin around each so they look like discs, and cut the beak as a small triangle between them. The body can be a simple oval scraped for a soft glow.

Owl pumpkin carving FAQ

What is the easiest owl pumpkin to carve?
Two large circles for eyes, a small triangle beak, and two pointed ear tufts cut into the top edge of the pumpkin. That alone reads as an owl. Skip the body and let the pumpkin be the body.
How do I carve owl feathers?
Scrape, do not cut. Use a clay loop or linoleum cutter to peel rows of U-shaped scallops from the bottom of the body upward, each row overlapping the one below like shingles. The scrapes glow softer than cutouts and the wall stays solid.
How do I make the owl's eyes look like discs?
Cut each eye as a large circle, then leave a thin ring of pumpkin just inside it and cut a smaller circle in the middle. The ring reads as the edge of the eye disc, and the inner cut is the pupil.
What kind of pumpkin suits an owl?
A short, wide pumpkin. Owls are round and squat, so a squat pumpkin makes the proportions look right. Tall pumpkins work for perched owls where the branch and moon fill the extra height.
Are the owl pumpkin stencils free?
Yes. Enter your email on a linked stencil page to unlock its free printable PDF. Print on letter or A4 paper and adjust the scale to your pumpkin. Related stencils may differ from the inspiration images in this gallery.
