   Move down into the layered chest feathers, cutting one row at a time from the top edge outward. Keep a thin rib of uncut rind between each feather so the rows stay separate and structurally sound. Angle the blade slightly to widen the openings on the inside, which lets more light escape. Rotate the pumpkin as you go rather than reaching across finished cuts.

   Finish the wings, feet, and shave the accents

   Cut the wing feathers and the taloned feet last, since these are the largest openings and weaken the wall most. For softer glowing details like the brow tufts or feather tips, shave off just the outer skin with a shaving tool instead of cutting through. This gives you a dim orange glow that contrasts with the bright pierced feathers. Save any big open areas for the very end.

   Light it and take the photo

   Set a battery LED or two inside through the back hole and avoid open flame near all that thin rind. Warm white lights make the orange glow richest through the feather openings. Photograph it in a dim room at dusk so the pierced pattern reads as bright shapes. A light coat of petroleum jelly on the cut edges slows drying and keeps it looking fresh longer.
