Skitter the Eight-Leg Spider

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

Pick a smooth-faced pumpkin and open the back

Choose a pumpkin with a wide, even front so the eight legs have room to spread. Cut a lid or a hatch in the back rather than the top, which keeps the carving face uninterrupted. Scoop the insides and thin the front wall to about one inch so your blade glides through. A thinner wall also makes the beveled tips glow more evenly.

2. 2

   Transfer the spider pattern

Center the round body low on the face and mark where the two body openings and eight legs will sit. Tape a home-printed stencil on and poke the outlines with a pin, or draw freehand with a washable marker. Space the legs four per side so they radiate out in a balanced fan. Step back and check the symmetry before any cutting starts.

3. 3

Carve the legs with an outward bevel

Start with the thin legs while the shell is still solid. Cut each one as a single long curved slice that narrows to a point, and tilt the saw slightly outward so the opening is wider on the inside than on the surface. That bevel is what makes the pointed tips knife out bright. Work one leg at a time and clear each sliver before moving to the next.

4. 4

   Cut the two body openings

The spider body reads as a small head opening above a larger round abdomen. Cut the smaller upper circle first, then the big lower one, saving the largest hole for last so the face keeps its strength. Keep a slim bridge of skin between the two body pieces so they stay distinct instead of merging into one blob. Smooth the inside edges with your knife tip for a clean glow.

5. 5

Clean edges and add an LED

Trace back over every cut to shave off ragged fibers, since crisp edges make the legs look sharp and deliberate. Drop a battery LED light or two inside and aim them toward the center so the abdomen becomes the brightest point. Test in a dark room and adjust the light placement until the leg tips light up. Never use a candle with thin cutout work like this.

6. 6

   Stage and photograph it

Set the pumpkin at eye level against a dark background so the glowing legs pop. Shoot in a dim room with the LED as your only light and turn off your flash. Take one straight-on frame to show the full spread and one slight angle to show the beveled depth. A dab of petroleum jelly on the cut edges slows drying if you want it to last a few more nights.
