Leave the very center of the body almost untouched skin for the deepest shadow, then blend outward with gradually deeper scraping. This soft gradient gives the spider a raised, three-dimensional look without any full cutouts. Step back often to check that the center still reads darker than the edges.

   Clean the edges and refine

   Go back over every scored line and tidy the border between peeled flesh and untouched skin so the shapes stay crisp. Nick a few short shadow lines into the legs and body if you want extra texture, keeping them shallow. Brush away pulp crumbs and wipe the surface. Rub a thin coat of petroleum jelly on the exposed flesh to slow drying and browning.

   Stage and photograph

   Set the pumpkin on a garden bench or step where daylight rakes across the front and makes the peeled areas glow pale against the orange. If you cut a back opening, drop in a battery LED for evening viewing, and skip real candles entirely. Shoot photos in the first day or two while the contrast is freshest. Bring it indoors overnight to make the carving last longer.
