   Tape the pattern flat against the front, easing small folds into the pumpkin's curve. Poke through the lines with a pin or transfer tool to mark the hat, figure outline, guitar body, ribs, and leg details. Remove the paper and lightly connect the dots with a marker. Double check which areas stay as skin, the hat brim and the outer figure edge, before any blade touches the pumpkin.

   Carve the fine detail first

   Start with the delicate work while the pumpkin is still solid and strong. Use a thin, sharp blade to cut the guitar strings and rib lines in single controlled passes, since these narrow bits chip if you saw back and forth. Keep short bridges of skin between strings so they do not collapse into one big hole. Take your time on the sombrero band and the face; small errors show most in the detail zones.

   Cut the large openings last

   Once the fine lines are done, cut the big shapes: the guitar body, the open torso and rib gaps, and the negative space around the figure. Working large-to-last keeps the pumpkin rigid while you handle the tricky parts. Push carved pieces gently outward with a fingertip so you do not crack neighboring edges. Leave the hat brim and the figure's silhouette uncut so the design reads as a solid dark shape.

   Light it and take your photo

   Skip the candle and drop in a battery LED, ideally a warm flickering one, to mimic that orange glow. Set it on a small dish inside so it sits below the ribcage and throws light up through the torso. Photograph at dusk against a simple background so the cutouts stand out. If any thin string looks weak, a dab of petroleum jelly on the cut edges slows drying and helps it last a few extra days.
