   Using a fine detail saw, carve the main body outline as narrow channels that pierce all the way through the wall. Keep each cut thin, roughly the width of the blade, so the lines glow without weakening the pumpkin. Work slowly on the curves of the snout and back, and let an adult handle the saw for younger carvers. Save the belly and leg lines for after the big outline so the wall stays supported while you work.

   Open the eye and nostril

   To make the face read from a distance, widen the eye and the nostril into small full cutouts rather than thin lines. Start with a poke hole, then round each opening out gently so it sits like a little bright dot. Keep these holes modest in size so the hippo still looks friendly and not scary. Leave a solid band of skin between the eye, ear, and snout lines so those details stay separate and clear.

   Clean up and test the glow

   Trace back over every channel with the saw to clear away clinging bits and even out the line width. Wipe the cut edges with a damp cloth so the light passes cleanly. Drop in a battery LED light and check the hippo in a dark room. If any line looks dim, gently shave the inside edge of that channel thinner until it brightens.

   Set it out and photograph

   Rub a little petroleum jelly on the cut edges to slow drying and keep the lines crisp for a few days. Place the pumpkin on a flat step with the LED inside and turn off nearby porch lights for the photo. Shoot slightly to one side so the glowing outline of the snout and legs stands out against the dark skin. A second small light behind the pumpkin adds a soft halo if you want extra drama.
