Spike the Strutting Iguana Pumpkin Carving Idea

Pick a tall pumpkin and clean it out

Choose a large pumpkin with a wide, fairly flat front so the long horizontal iguana has room to stretch. Cut a lid from the bottom or back instead of the top, which keeps the front face uninterrupted and makes the light easy to reach. Scoop the pulp and scrape the inside of the carving wall down to about one inch thick. A thinner wall makes the fine crest triangles far easier to saw.

Transfer your stencil

Tape your iguana pattern flat against the front, snipping the edges of the paper so it hugs the curve without wrinkling. Poke the outline with a pushpin or transfer tool, following every triangle of the crest, each tail band, and the toe lines. Space the pin holes closely on the small details so the shapes stay readable once the paper comes off. Peel the pattern and connect the dots lightly with a marker if anything looks unclear.

Saw the spiny crest first

Work the row of little triangles along the back with a fine keyhole saw, starting near the head and moving toward the tail. Cut each triangle as its own small opening and leave the short strip of skin between them fully intact, since those strips hold the whole crest together. Let the saw do the work with gentle strokes so you do not snap a narrow point. Go slow here because these are the most delicate cuts in the design.

Cut the body and tail outlines

Move to the long outline that traces the belly, legs, and curling tail. These are thin channels of light, so cut narrow slots and keep plenty of solid pumpkin between them. Do the banded tail as a line of short separate cuts rather than one long opening, which keeps the tail supported. Save any wider openings, like the space under the arched back, for last so the wall stays rigid while you work.

Clean the edges and test the glow

Trim the inside edges of each cut at a slight outward angle so more light spills through the lines. Gently push cut pieces out from the inside to avoid cracking the front. Drop in an LED tea light or a small battery puck and check the glow in a dark room. If any line looks dim, widen it slightly or scrape the inner edge thinner.

Stage it on the step and photograph

Set the finished pumpkin on a porch step at dusk with a warm LED inside for that fiery outline look. Face the iguana toward foot traffic so the profile is the first thing visitors see. A pot of mums or fallen leaves nearby adds a seasonal frame. Snap your photo just after sunset when the cutout lines glow strongest against the darker skin.
