Prep the pumpkin and mount the pattern

Pick a tall, smooth pumpkin with a broad flat face for the portrait. Cut a lid from the bottom instead of the top so the stem stays intact, then scrape the front interior wall down to about one inch so light passes evenly. Tape your iguana stencil flat over the face and transfer the outline, spines, and major scale zones with a poking tool or transfer paper. Mark which areas are eye, body, spines, and foliage so you do not lose track once shading begins.

Establish the outline and depth map

With a fine detail knife, score the full silhouette of the iguana and the foliage blades so your shaded areas have clean edges. Decide your depth zones now: darkest untouched skin for the background, a shallow peel for the body scales, and deeper carving for the throat, jaw, and eye. Working shallow to deep keeps you from removing too much too early. Take your time here since this map controls the entire glow.

Peel the body and shade the midtones

Use a ribbon loop or shallow gouge to skin the iguana's body, neck, and tail down to the dim orange layer. Vary the thickness slightly so the form looks rounded rather than flat. Keep the deepest jowl and throat areas thinner for extra glow, and leave the eye region for later. Check progress against an LED light from inside every few minutes so you can read the values as they build.

Stipple the scale texture

Switch to a small ball-gouge and dab short, overlapping impressions across the body to suggest scales. Let the scales grow larger along the belly and finer toward the head, following the direction of the body. Do not push all the way through; you want texture, not holes. Rotate the pumpkin so your wrist stays comfortable and the stippling stays even.

Raise the spines and carve the eye

Clean up the dorsal crest with a narrow v-tool, carving the skin away on both sides of each spine so the spines stand in relief and catch the most light. Keep small skin bridges at the base of each spine so none snap off. Carve the eye area the deepest of anywhere on the pumpkin, thinning it until it will read as the brightest point, and leave a tiny untouched dot for the pupil. Save this deepest cut for last so the surrounding skin stays strong while you work.

Light it and photograph

Drop an LED puck light inside and set the pumpkin at eye level in a dim spot to judge the depth shifts. Adjust any zones that look too dark by peeling a little more, going slowly since you cannot add material back. Wipe the cut edges and rub a thin coat of petroleum jelly on them to slow drying. Shoot your photo at dusk on a porch step so the warm glow shows off the scale texture.
