Pick a round pumpkin and open the base

Choose a tall, evenly rounded pumpkin with a smooth front panel for the design. Cut a wide opening in the bottom rather than the top so the pumpkin sits flat and drops over the light. Scoop the insides and thin the carving wall to about one inch so your blade passes easily. A thinner wall also lets peeled areas glow more evenly.

Transfer your stencil and mark the keepers

Tape a Jack Russell puppy stencil flat against the front, clipping the paper edges so it hugs the curve. Use a poker or transfer tool to dot along every line. Before you cut, shade the pieces that must stay solid, the eye patch, the nose, and the thin leg gaps, so you never remove them by mistake. Peel the paper and double check your marks against the photo.

Carve the interior body openings first

Start with the large open areas of the chest and belly, working from the center of each shape outward toward the lines. Cutting the roomy middle first relieves pressure so the shell will not crack near delicate spots. Keep your saw blade straight in and out, and make slow, patient strokes rather than forcing it. Pop each freed piece out gently with a finger from inside.

Shape the ears, muzzle, and outline

Move to the head, cutting the light gaps that define the cocked ears and the muzzle while leaving the nose and eye patch as raised rind. Keep those saved patches connected to the surrounding shell on at least one edge so they stay anchored. Take short strokes around tight curves and reposition the pumpkin often rather than twisting your wrist. The contrast between glowing body and dark markings is what makes the face read as a terrier.

Cut the thin legs and tail last

Save the narrow leg gaps and the upright tail for the end, when the rest of the design is stable. Cut the spaces around each leg carefully so the legs themselves stay as solid bridges holding the shape together. If a bridge feels weak, leave it slightly wider rather than risk a snap. Clean up ragged edges with a small detail blade for a crisp silhouette.

Light it and photograph

Slide a battery puck LED in through the bottom opening and set the pumpkin over it, never a candle. Test the glow in a dark room and rotate the light or scrape the inside wall thinner if any area looks dim. For the porch photo, shoot at dusk with a lantern nearby for warm fill light. Mist the cut edges with water to keep them from browning before the shoot.
