   Pick and prep the pumpkin

   Choose a round, tall pumpkin with a broad, even face so the fanned leaves have room to spread. Cut a wide lid or a bottom hatch so you can reach up inside to thin the front wall. Scrape the inside of the carving face down to about one inch thick with a loop tool. A thinner wall makes the light glow evenly and makes the many small cuts easier.

   Transfer the design

   Center your flytrap stencil on the front and tape it flat, snipping the paper edges so it hugs the curve. Poke the outlines with a pin or a transfer wheel, following the two jaw shapes, the interior teeth, and each leaf point below. Space the dots close together on the tight curves so the shapes read clearly. Peel the paper and connect any faint areas with a washable marker.

   Cut the leaf points and inner teeth first

   Start with the small pointed openings along the leaves and the spikes lining the trap. Use a fine detail saw and make slow, straight strokes, letting the blade do the work rather than forcing it. Leave a little extra width on each tooth so it does not crumble, and keep thin uncut bridges between crowded points to hold the wall rigid. Push the cut pieces inward and out through the lid opening.

   Shade the leaf bodies

   For the fleshy parts of the leaves and the outer curve of each jaw, peel just the skin instead of cutting through. Scrape away the orange skin with a shallow gouge to expose the pale flesh, going only a couple millimeters deep. This gives a dim orange glow that separates the leaf shapes from the bright cutouts. Vary the depth slightly to suggest rounded, plump leaves.

   Open the jaws last

   Save the two large trap openings for the end so the wall stays strong through all the detail work. Cut them cleanly with the detail saw, working from the center outward, and support the surrounding wall with your free hand. Round the inside edges a little so light spills out smoothly. Test the fit of any interior teeth so they still connect to the frame.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a battery LED candle or a small LED puck low inside so the light pushes up through the trap chambers and out the leaf tips. Skip real flames, since the thin teeth and shading dry out fast and scorch. Take your photo at dusk, like the sunset scene shown, so the warm glow reads against the fading sky. Mist the cut edges with water and store it cool between showings to slow shrinking.
