Pick a tall canvas and gut it

Choose a tall, evenly rounded pumpkin with a smooth front face so the radiating petals have room to spread. Cut a lid from the bottom or back rather than the top so the stem stays intact for this flower look. Scrape the inside wall behind the design down to about one inch thick so your cuts go through cleanly. A thinner, even wall makes the many small tooth openings far easier to control.

Transfer the pattern and read the bridges

Tape your stencil flat against the front, snipping the edges so it hugs the curve without wrinkling. Poke the outlines with a transfer tool or pin, spacing dots close together on the fine tooth tips. Before you cut, trace the design with your eye and confirm every tooth and petal is separated by an unbroken band of skin. Those bands are your bridges, and they are what keep the whole face from collapsing.

Start with the center teeth

Cut the smallest teeth inside the maw first, using a fine detail saw or a sharp craft knife held by an adult. Work each tooth as its own little pierced opening and leave the skin lines between them alone. Starting small means you always have solid wall around your blade to brace against. Take your time and let the saw do the work instead of forcing it.

Open the mouth cavity

Once the teeth are defined, cut the larger open areas of the maw between the upper and lower tooth rows. These wider openings will be the brightest glowing part, so keep their edges clean. Support the cut piece with a finger from behind as it comes free so it does not tear the delicate teeth. Remove waste gently rather than popping it out.

Work outward through the petals

Move to the jagged petals last, cutting the longer, thinner shapes now that the center is done. Cut each petal as its own opening and preserve the narrow skin veins that separate one petal from the next. If a bridge feels fragile, cut the openings on either side more slowly and avoid twisting the blade. Save the longest outer petal tips for the very end since they are the most likely to snap.

Light it and photograph

Drop in a battery LED light, never a candle, since the thin bridges near the teeth can scorch. Set the pumpkin at eye level in a dim room so the maw and petals glow against the dark skin. Take your photo slightly off center to catch the depth in the tooth openings. If any bridge looks too bright or ragged, a quick trim with the knife will tidy the edge.
