Prep and transfer the pattern

Pick a large pumpkin with a wide, fairly flat front so both eyes fit side by side. Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top, then scrape the inside wall of the front down to about one inch so light passes through easily. Tape your two-eye stencil flat against the front and poke the outlines with a transfer tool or pin. Mark clearly which small shapes are cut-through cracks and which round centers must stay as solid bridges.

Score the crack lines first

Before removing anything, trace every jagged crack with a shallow scoring cut so the design is locked in. The uploader caption suggests carving the spiderweb cracks before the eye rings, which lets you rework any sliver that looks too thin. Keep each crack segment a comfortable width, at least a pencil-width, so the surrounding skin does not crumble. An adult should handle all the sharp saws and knives.

Cut the thin crack fissures

Using a fine detail saw, cut through the scored crack lines one short segment at a time. Work from the outer tips inward and leave small uncut gaps between segments so the whole front does not weaken at once. If a piece feels fragile, stop and leave a tiny bridge to anchor it. Push cut chunks inward and lift them out gently to avoid tearing the edges.

Cut the eye rings, keep the irises solid

Now carve the two circular rings that frame each eye, cutting only the ring band and leaving the center iris circle fully attached to the pumpkin wall. Those dark iris disks are your bridges, so do not undercut them. Take your time where a ring meets a crack line, cutting each shape separately rather than joining them into one big hole. This is the part that gives the design its staring dragon-eye effect.

Clean edges and open the biggest shapes last

Go back and bevel the inside edges of the rings and cracks slightly toward the light to boost the glow. Save the largest openings for last so the face keeps its strength while you work. Test-fit an LED and check that every iris still stands proud and dark. Trim any ragged spots with a small loop tool.

Light it and photograph

Drop in a battery LED, ideally a flicker bulb, which makes the fissured edges look like shifting firelight. Set the pumpkin outdoors at dusk against a simple background so the two eyes dominate. Shoot slightly off-center to catch the depth of the beveled cracks. Mist the cut edges with water if they start to dry and curl during your shoot.
