Transfer a clean stencil

Pick a hunched zombie stencil with a screaming face, raised arm, and jagged ground. Scale it to fill the flat front of a tall, smooth pumpkin, then tape the pattern down snugly so it will not shift. Poke the outlines with a pin or transfer tool, spacing dots close together on curved lines like the hair and fingers. Peel the paper and darken the dots with a marker so the map is easy to read under a work light.

Hollow the pumpkin and thin the wall

Have an adult cut a lid or, better, a wide bottom opening so the pumpkin sits flat over an LED. Scoop the seeds and scrape the inside wall behind your design down to about one inch thick. A thinner wall makes the many cutouts far easier and cleaner. Set a battery LED inside to test how bright the front glows before you commit to cuts.

Cut the face details first

Start with the smallest interior shapes: the hollow eye sockets, the jagged open mouth, and the brow lines of the screaming face. Use a fine saw blade with light pressure and let the tool do the work. Doing these first, while the surrounding rind is still solid, keeps the head stable and prevents it from tearing loose if the pumpkin flexes later. Clear each small piece fully so light passes cleanly.

Save the hair and raised arm with bridges

The ragged hair strands and the thin raised arm are the fragile parts. Cut around them carefully and leave small uncut bridges of rind where a strand meets the body, so nothing snaps off. Keep blades sharp so you push less and control more. If a piece feels loose, add a toothpick from the inside to brace it rather than forcing the cut.

Remove the large torso and ground openings last

Now take out the big torso sections, the gap between the legs, and the jagged earth shapes at the feet. These are the widest holes, so save them for last to keep the pumpkin rigid while you carve. Cut in short segments and support each panel with your free hand as it releases. Trim the inside edges at a slight bevel so more light spills through the large openings.

Light it and photograph

Drop in a bright LED, warm white looks best for that fiery zombie glow. Test in a dark room and clean up any thin spots by shaving the inside wall where the figure looks dim. Set it on a porch step against a plain wall so the pierced silhouette reads clearly. Photograph at dusk with the surrounding lights low for the strongest effect.
