Prep the pumpkin and transfer the pattern

Pick a tall, evenly shaped pumpkin and cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top, so the stem stays intact for looks. Scrape the inside wall behind the design down to about one inch thick so light passes through cleanly. Tape your two zombie stencil onto the front, keeping the oval centered, and poke the outlines with a transfer tool or pin. Mark clearly which areas are figures (stay as skin) and which are background oval (cut away).

Map your light zones before cutting

With a marker, shade in the whole oval background that will be cut through, and outline both zombie bodies and the two flaming heads that will stay dark. Note the small gaps between the arms, legs, and the tattered edges, since those are also background that glows. Double check the taller figure's head near the top edge and pencil in a small tab where it meets the oval rim. Planning this now keeps you from accidentally slicing a figure loose later.

Carve the small interior gaps first

Start with the tightest openings: the gap between the two figures, the space under raised arms, and the notches between the legs. Use a fine detail saw and make slow, steady passes, letting the blade do the work instead of forcing it. These small cuts relieve pressure and give the ragged edges their torn look. Leave the large outer oval intact for now so the pumpkin wall stays strong while you work.

Cut the oval rim and set the head tab

Now cut the oval outline itself, working around the perimeter in short sections. When you reach the taller figure's flaming head near the rim, stop and leave a small connecting tab of skin, about a quarter inch wide, joining that head to the surrounding rind. This tab holds the delicate head shape in place while everything below is still being freed. Keep the ragged silhouette edges slightly jagged so the tattered clothing and flame shapes stay believable.

Free the background and remove the tab last

Once the bodies and lower details are fully carved and stable, gently push out the large oval background pieces from the inside. Work in a few chunks rather than one big piston, supporting the wall with your free hand. With the design now fully supported, carefully trim away the small tab at the taller head so it reads as a separate floating shape. Clean up any rough edges with the detail saw or a small loop tool.

Light it and photograph

Set a battery LED light or two inside, never a candle, since the thin wall and fine cutouts can scorch. Warm white LEDs give that deep orange interior glow that makes the dark zombie shapes pop. Place the pumpkin in a dim room and shoot slightly off center so the light does not blow out the details. Rub a little petroleum jelly on the cut edges to slow drying and keep the ragged lines crisp for a few days.
