The Zombie at the Window Pumpkin Carving Idea

Prep the pumpkin and pick your window

Choose a tall pumpkin with a wide, flat front panel so the window and figure both fit without wrapping around a curve. Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top so the stem stays intact and the shell holds its shape. Scrape the inside wall of the carving face down to about one inch thick using a loop tool. A thinner, even wall makes the peeled and cut areas glow more evenly.

Transfer your stencil

Tape your printed pattern flat against the front and poke the outlines with a pin or transfer tool, marking every corner of each window pane, the frame bars, and the zombie's outline. Pay special attention to the small raised hands in the upper corners and the thin bar lines. Peel the paper and connect any faint dots with a washable marker. Double-check that the frame bars and the zombie stay as connected dark shapes before you cut anything.

Cut the large window panes first

Remove each rectangular pane one at a time as its own opening, leaving the vertical and horizontal frame bars uncut between them. Cutting the panes individually keeps those bars rigid so they do not flex or snap. Use a small saw blade and make clean, straight passes, pushing the waste piece inward. An adult should handle all the sharp tools, and go slow on the long straight edges.

Open the glow around the figure

Cut through the background space that surrounds the zombie so light frames the body clearly, keeping the zombie itself as solid dark rind. Follow the outline of the raised arms and skirt carefully, but leave the tiny hands and any thin wisps for the final step. Keep the figure and the frame bars attached to the surrounding shell so nothing droops.

Peel the accents and finish the hands

For softer mid glow, skin-peel a few small shapes such as the drifting embers or a faint edge of the window sill so they read dimly against the bright panes. Once the big panes are already open and the shell is stable, carefully cut the zombie's small raised hands at the upper corners last. Take your time here since these are the most fragile cuts and the surrounding openings give you room to work.

Light it and photograph

Set a battery LED puck or string inside, never a candle, since the thin frame bars and open panes can scorch. Place the pumpkin at dusk near a warm background like weathered wood or gravel to echo the golden-hour look. Rotate the light to even out any dark spots and prop it slightly forward so the panes throw the brightest glow. Snap your photo just after sunset when the sky still holds color.
