Coiling dragon

A long body that wraps around the pumpkin, often a Chinese-style dragon. Cut the body as a series of scraped scales with the outline cut through, and keep each coil at least an inch from the next so the wall holds. This is the design that uses the whole pumpkin.

Dragon eye and head

A single slit-pupil eye with scaled skin around it, or a head silhouette. The eye is the easiest way to get a dragon on a pumpkin: cut the slit pupil through, scrape the iris and surrounding scales, and let the light do the rest.

Friendly baby dragon

A round, big-eyed dragon with small wings and a smile. It carves like a cartoon face: cut the eyes and mouth through, scrape the belly, and leave the spines along the back as a scalloped edge. Kids can help with the scraping.

Fire-breathing dragon

A dragon in profile with flames pouring from its mouth. The flames are the brightest part, so cut them fully through in jagged tongues and scrape the dragon's body so it glows dimmer. Wings can be scraped membrane with the bones left as solid lines.

Dragon pumpkin carving FAQ

What is the easiest dragon design to carve?
A dragon eye. Cut a vertical slit for the pupil, scrape a ring around it for the iris, and scrape a few overlapping scales on either side. It reads as a dragon from any distance and there are no thin bridges to break.
How do I carve dragon scales?
Scrape them. Use a clay loop or the tip of a linoleum cutter to peel rows of overlapping crescents, each row offset from the one below. Scraped scales glow orange against the dark skin and give texture without weakening the pumpkin.
How do I carve dragon wings so they do not break?
Leave the wing bones as solid pumpkin and scrape the membrane between them instead of cutting it through. If you want the membrane to glow bright, cut through only the largest panels and keep every bone at least half an inch wide.
How do I make the fire look like it is glowing?
Cut the flames all the way through and make them the biggest opening on the pumpkin, so they get the most light. Then put a red or orange LED inside, angled toward the mouth.
Are the dragon pumpkin stencils free?
Yes. Enter your email on a linked stencil page to unlock its free printable PDF. Print on letter or A4 paper and adjust the scale to your pumpkin. Related stencils may differ from the inspiration images in this gallery.
