Push each freed piece out toward you carefully so you do not snap the point.

   Open the wings and body sections

   Move to the jagged wings behind the body, cutting the inner openings before the outer edges so the wing keeps its backbone while you work. Leave slim bridges of skin between wing segments so the thin struts do not collapse. Then cut the body openings, the arms, and the belly gap. Save the largest opening for last so the surrounding wall stays firm the whole time.

   Refine edges and eyes

   Go back and clean up any rough cuts with a fine tool or a small paring knife handled by an adult. Round the inside edges of the eye and cheek slightly so light spreads and softens the face. Check that every bridge is still attached and trim any hanging pulp inside. Test fit the openings by holding the pumpkin up to a window.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a battery LED puck or string inside, never a candle, since the many cutouts can dry the edges fast. Position the light low and slightly forward so the flame and belly glow brightest. Take your photo at dusk on a porch or table so the warm light pops against the blue evening. Mist the cut edges with water and cover with plastic overnight to keep it fresh.
