Support the tail with your free hand as you finish each pass so it does not crack under its own weight. Clean up ragged edges with a gentle bevel from the inside for a brighter glow.

   Light it and take the photo

   Set a battery LED or a string of LEDs inside, never a candle, so the flame cannot catch the thin bridges. Position the light low and slightly behind the belly to make the stripe ladder read as a warm segmented band. Rub a little petroleum jelly on cut edges to slow drying. Shoot your photo at dusk on a dark step so the glow stands out.
