Prep the pumpkin and transfer the design

Pick a tall, smooth pumpkin with one broad, flat-ish face for the dragon. Cut a lid from the bottom instead of the top so the stem stays intact, then scrape the carving wall down to about one inch thick with a sturdy scoop. Tape your dragon stencil to the front and poke the outlines with a pin or a transfer tool. Trace the dotted lines lightly with a marker so you can see every horn, tooth, and tail curl before you start.

Carve the head and mane details first

Start with the fine cuts around the horned head, the open mouth, the teeth, and the flowing mane strands. Use a small detail saw or a craft knife and take your time on the pointed tips. Leave narrow bridges of skin between neighboring flame-like strands so nothing snaps free. Doing this delicate work now is much easier while the surrounding wall is still firm and unweakened.

Cut the banded underbelly and spine

Move down to the horizontal belly bands and the row of spikes along the back. Cut each band as its own separate opening, keeping the solid rind between bands intact so the pattern reads clearly. Angle the blade slightly outward on larger shapes to help light spread. Work from the middle of a shape toward its points to keep control.

Open the legs, claws, and spiral tail

Carve the clawed feet and the curled spiral tail, saving the biggest openings for last. The spiral needs a thin curved wall left in place at its center, so cut around it rather than through it. Keep the claws as clean pierced triangles with skin bridges between the toes. If any section feels loose, stop and leave more connecting material.

Clean edges and test the glow

Go back and bevel the inside edges of the larger cuts with your knife so more light escapes. Drop in an LED puck or battery tea light, never a real flame, and check which shapes are dim. Shave any thick edges from the inside until every part of the dragon lights evenly. Wipe away loose pulp so the openings stay crisp.

Stage and photograph it

Set the finished pumpkin on a dry outdoor surface at dusk for the best contrast. Position the LED low and slightly behind the openings so the dragon reads as bright shapes against dark skin. Add a lantern nearby for warm ambient light in the frame. Take your photo before the cut edges start to dry and curl.
