Keep the removed area even, brushing away shavings so you can judge the tone as you go.

   Go back with the gouge and carve short, shallow strokes for the mane along the neck and a few flowing lines in the tail. Leave a thin ridge of untouched skin between strokes so they read as separate hairs. You can also leave the eye and hoof edges slightly darker by shaving them less. These small tone shifts give the flat silhouette some life.

   Seal and stage it

   Rub the peeled areas with a little vegetable oil or petroleum jelly to slow browning and keep the pale tone bright. Set the pumpkin on a garden bench or porch step where daylight rakes across the surface and shows the texture. No light goes inside this design, so it is safe to leave out during the day. Refresh with a light oil wipe each morning and expect a few days of good looks before it softens.
