Doing all the shading before any cutting keeps the surface strong while you press.

   Once shading is done, switch to a fine saw for the full cutouts around the muzzle, under the belly, and in the small gaps between the legs. Cut the smallest openings first and save the largest for last so the panel stays rigid as long as possible. Leave narrow strips of skin between the legs intact; these bridges connect everything to the ground line and stop the legs from snapping. Ease the tool in and out gently rather than forcing it.

   Clean up and test the edges

   Trim any ragged edges from the inside with a paring knife so light passes cleanly through the cutouts. Hold the pumpkin up to a window or lamp to check that the peeled body glows dim and the cutouts read bright. If the belly gap looks weak, do not widen it further; add a touch more peeling nearby instead. Wipe the front with a damp cloth to remove marker lines.

   Light it and photograph at dusk

   Set a battery LED puck or string inside, never a candle, since the thin bridges and peeled areas can scorch. Warm white or amber bulbs give that soft barnyard glow. Place the pumpkin on a step at dusk with a lantern or mums nearby for a cozy porch scene. Shoot photos just after sunset when the ambient light still shows the pumpkin's shape but the carving reads bright.
