   For the pale eyebrows, whiskers, and the front of the beard, scrape deeper so the pumpkin wall gets thin and lets more light through. Hold the pumpkin up to a lamp now and then to judge how bright each spot is before you go further. Keep short bridges of thicker flesh between whisker strands so the fine details stay supported and do not tear. This is where the schnauzer character comes alive, so take your time.

   Refine texture and fur direction

   Go back over the whole face with a fine detail tool to add hair strokes, blending the transitions between your dark, mid, and bright zones. Feather the edges where the beard meets the cheeks so no hard line stands out. Wipe the surface clean and hold it to the light again, then deepen any area that still reads too flat. Small overlapping strokes sell the wiry coat better than long smooth ones.

   Light it and photograph on the porch

   Set a battery LED puck or string inside through a lid or a back access hole, never a candle, since the thin shaded wall can scorch. Warm white light gives the amber tone seen here. Set the finished pumpkin on a step at dusk, wipe the cut edges, and rub a little petroleum jelly on the scraped areas to slow drying. Shoot from straight on so the face reads clearly.
