Prep the pumpkin and pick your side

Choose a tall pumpkin with one broad, flat face that has few ribs or blemishes. Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top so the stem stays intact and the design face is clean. Scoop the inside thoroughly and thin the carving wall to about one inch so your tools pass through easily. A smooth, even wall makes the crisp tractor edges much simpler to cut.

Transfer the tractor pattern

Tape your tractor stencil flat against the chosen face, snipping the edges of the paper so it hugs the curve without wrinkling. Poke the outlines with a pin or a transfer tool, spacing dots close together on the tight curves of the wheels. Peel the paper and go over the dots lightly with a washable marker so the shapes are easy to follow. Double check that the cab, body, and both wheels connect the way you want before you cut.

Carve the rear wheel hub first

Start with the small enclosed hub circle and its crossbars inside the big rear wheel. Use a fine saw or a detail knife and cut these interior shapes while the surrounding rind is still solid and well supported. Working on this small area first means the pumpkin wall stays rigid and less likely to flex or tear. Take your time and let the tool do the work with gentle strokes.

Cut the cab windows and front hub

Move to the two square cab windows and the smaller front wheel hub next. Keep the narrow bars between windows intact, since those bridges hold the shape together and add detail. Cut the front wheel's inner opening before its outer ring for the same reason. Push the cut pieces out gently from the inside so the front faces stay crisp.

Open the big outer shapes last

Now cut the large outlines: the lugged rear tire edge, the boxy cab roof, and the tractor body. Save the biggest openings for last so all the delicate rind between the tire and the body stayed supported while you worked. For the lugged tire tread, make short angled cuts around the rim to give it that chunky, toothed look. Ease each piece out slowly to avoid cracking a bridge.

Light it and take your photo

Drop in a battery LED light rather than a candle, since the enclosed shapes need even, safe glow and no flame near the rind. Set the pumpkin on a table with a warm lamp behind it and shoot in a dim room so the cutouts pop. If any edge looks fuzzy, trim it clean with a paring knife and shave the inside behind dim spots to brighten them. A little petroleum jelly on the cut edges keeps them from drying out overnight.
