   Taper the branches into twigs

   Work outward from each main limb, narrowing every branch as it reaches toward the edges. Let the channels stay connected so light flows from trunk to twig tip in one continuous line. Finish each twig as a fine point rather than a blunt end for that windblown, reaching look. Leave short bridges of skin where two twigs cross so neither piece weakens.

   Peel the ground and shadow shapes

   For the dim glow near the base and in the gaps between roots, peel away only the skin and a shallow layer of flesh instead of cutting through. This gives a softer amber tone that separates the bright branches from the dark background. Use a lino or ribbon tool and keep the depth even. Save these peeled areas until the cuts are done so the wall stays firm.

   Light it and take the photo

   Set a battery LED tea light or a small puck light inside, never a candle near these thin branches. Test in a dark room and rotate the light until the moon and the branch veins glow evenly. If any channel looks dim, thin its back wall slightly from the inside. Photograph it against a dark background so the fiery tree stands out.
