Feathered Longwing Butterfly Pumpkin Carving Idea

Pick a tall pumpkin and clean it out

Choose a rounded pumpkin with a smooth, wide front so the full wingspan fits without wrapping around the ribs. Cut a lid from the bottom instead of the top so it sits flat and hides the light cord. Scoop the insides and thin the carving wall to about one inch so your blade passes through easily. A thinner wall also lets the slit texture glow evenly.

Transfer a symmetrical butterfly pattern

Print or draw a butterfly with large scalloped upper wings and smaller tapered lower wings, keeping both sides mirrored. Tape the pattern flat against the front, snipping the edges so it hugs the curve, and poke through all the lines with a pushpin or transfer tool. Mark the body, the wing borders, and every radiating slit as areas that stay as skin. Pull the paper and connect your dots with a marker so the plan is clear before any cutting.

Cut the narrow radiating slits first

Start with the thin parallel slits inside each wing, working from the body outward. Use a fine detail saw and let the surrounding uncut skin brace the delicate slit walls while you work. Keep each slit the same width as its neighbors for that even feathered look, and leave small skin bridges between them so nothing collapses. Take your time here since these lines carry the whole effect.

Open the outer wing panels

Once the inner slits are done, cut through the larger open sections of each wing that surround the slit clusters. Support the pumpkin from inside with your free hand as you saw so the freed pieces drop cleanly outward. Work one wing quarter at a time to keep the structure stable. Save the biggest openings, like the wide upper wing scallops, for last.

Clean up borders and body

Trim the wing-edge borders and the center body so their outlines stay crisp and raised. Gently bevel the inside edges of the cutouts toward the center so more light spills through. Check that both wings match by eye and touch up any slit that reads thinner than its mirror. Rinse away loose bits and pat the surface dry.

Light it and photograph

Set a battery LED puck or string inside, never a candle, since the thin slit walls dry and scorch easily. Position the light low and central so it fans up through the wings evenly. Dim the room and shoot slightly off to one side to catch the texture of the slits. If any panel looks dark, peel a little skin from its back to brighten it.
