Pick and mount your stencil

Choose a symmetrical monarch pattern where the wing panels are separated by clear, thick vein lines. Tape it flat against the smoothest side of a tall pumpkin, smoothing out wrinkles so the shape does not distort. A pumpkin with a broad, even face gives the wings room to spread. Trace or poke the outline through so the whole butterfly transfers cleanly.

Open a back access hole

Instead of cutting the lid up top, cut a round opening in the back of the pumpkin so the carved face stays uninterrupted. Have an adult make this cut with a serrated carving saw held at a slight angle so the plug does not fall in. Scoop out the seeds and stringy pulp, then thin the inside wall behind the butterfly to about one inch. A thinner wall makes the panels far easier to saw and lets more light through.

Transfer and drill the dots

Poke the pattern lines onto the skin with a pin tool, following every vein and panel edge. Use a small hand drill or a round gouge to make the dotted borders along the wing edges, since those clean circles read as monarch spots. Drill a starter hole inside each wing panel too, which gives your saw a place to begin without stressing the veins. Work slowly and keep the dots evenly spaced.

Saw the panels from the inside out

Starting from each drilled hole, saw outward toward the panel edge so pressure pushes into open space, never against a thin vein. Keep the saw upright and let it do the work with short strokes. Cut the smallest panels first while the pumpkin is most solid, then move to the larger ones. Leave every vein line and the body stripe fully intact so the wings stay connected and structurally sound.

Carve the antennae and body last

The paired antennae are thin, so score their outline and only cut the narrow gaps beside them, leaving the antennae themselves as attached bridges of skin. Shape the body as a peeled channel rather than a full cutout so it glows softer than the wings. Clean up any ragged edges with the tip of your saw or a detail knife. Save these delicate finishing cuts until all the big panels are done.

Light it and photograph

Drop a bright battery LED puck inside through the back hole, or two if the pumpkin is large, to make the panels blaze evenly. Skip candles, since the heat warps thin veins and dries the cuts fast. Set the pumpkin on a step or porch at dusk and shoot slightly off to the side so the glow reads through the wings. A dab of petroleum jelly on the cut edges slows browning if you want it to last a few extra days.
