   With a fine detail knife, gently link the drilled holes into narrow slits where you want full brightness.    Cut the reeds and open accents last

   Now slice the tall grass blades and reed dots along the lower wings, saving these bigger openings for the end when the shell is still firm. Angle the knife slightly outward so light fans forward. Double check that the body strip and wing frame remain fully attached. Trim any ragged edges from the back for a crisp front.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a battery LED puck or string inside so the fine cuts glow without heat, and never use a candle near this much thin detail. Warm white light shows the lace effect best. Place it on a porch step at dusk and shoot slightly off to one side to catch the vein texture. A light coat of petroleum jelly on cut edges slows drying so it lasts longer.
