   Step back, then go over any wing that looks patchy with a light second pass so the tones match. Soften ragged edges by tracing the outline once more with your tool. Wipe the whole face clean and rub a little petroleum jelly or vegetable oil into the peeled areas to slow drying and keep the orange bright. Since the pumpkin is never opened, this design can stay fresh outdoors for a week or more.

   Light it and photograph

   Because there are no openings, set a small battery LED puck against the carved face or use a bright LED spotlight aimed at the peeled areas from the side. Skip candles entirely, both for safety and because an open flame would not shine through unpierced skin anyway. Try the light in a dim room first to see the wings glow, then move it outdoors at dusk.
