Prep the pumpkin and pick your view

Choose a tall, smooth pumpkin with a flat area on the front large enough for the face. Cut a lid or a back door and scoop the wall on the carving side down to about one inch so the skin peels evenly. Wipe the front dry and let it come to room temperature. A smooth, pale surface gives you the cleanest contrast between dark rind and peeled areas.

Transfer a posterized stencil

Print a photo of a Bernese mountain dog reduced to two or three tones, so you can clearly see the white blaze, cheeks, and chest against the dark fur. Tape the pattern flat to the front and poke through the outlines with a pin or transfer tool. Mark which regions stay dark and which get peeled so you do not lose track once the paper comes off. Step back and check the proportions before you touch a blade.

Peel the light regions to one even depth

With a ribbon or shallow gouge, remove only the outer skin inside the marked light shapes, going about an eighth of an inch deep. Keep the depth consistent so the glow reads evenly rather than blotchy. Work the large chest and blaze first, then the cheeks, leaving the surrounding fur fully untouched and dark. Take your time on edges where light meets dark, since crisp borders are what make the dog readable.

Add midtone shading for the muzzle and eyes

For the tan markings above the eyes and along the muzzle, peel a little more lightly or leave a thin skim of skin so those areas glow softer than the bright blaze. Vary your pressure to suggest the direction of the fur. Keep the eyes and nose mostly dark to anchor the face. This gentle range of depths is what gives the portrait its lifelike, dimensional look.

Cut through only the brightest accents

Save any full cutouts for last, when the shell is still strong. The open smiling mouth and tongue are the one place a true cutout adds a bright pop. Keep these openings small and leave narrow bridges of skin so the surrounding shapes stay supported. Cutting these last prevents the wall from flexing while you do the detailed peeling.

Light it and photograph on the bench

Drop in a battery LED, warm white looks best for a golden dog. Set the pumpkin where afternoon sun catches the peeled contrast during the day and the LED takes over at dusk. A weathered garden bench makes a handsome, natural backdrop. Mist the peeled areas with water if they start to dry and dull over the following days.
