   With a ribbon or loop tool, gently shave away only the outer orange skin around the bear across the whole panel. This peeled area will glow a soft dim orange and separate the bear from the untouched dark rind. Keep this pass shallow and even. Do not cut through the wall anywhere in this step.

   Etch the fur with short flicked strokes

   Switch to a small U-gouge and make many short strokes following the direction the fur grows, sweeping down the back and out along the legs. Vary your pressure so some strokes are barely there and others bite deeper. Leaving thin ridges of thicker flesh between strokes creates the shaggy, layered look. This is slow work, so take breaks and keep your free hand clear of the blade.

   Deepen the brightest spots

   Go back over the legs, lower belly, snout, and a highlight along the shoulder and thin those areas the most so they read almost white when lit. Leave the eye and the deepest shadow lines as untouched or barely peeled skin for contrast. Step back often and check the balance of light and dark. Deepen gradually because you cannot add flesh back.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a warm-white LED puck or bulb inside, never a candle, and push it toward the front wall so the fur catches the glow. Test in a dark room and thin any spots that stay too dull. A warm bulb gives the campfire tone that suits a cabin or lodge porch. Wipe the etched surface, then shoot at dusk for the best mix of ambient and inner light.
