   Now peel the two leaf sprigs and the ground line at the base. Keep each leaf and its stem connected to the surrounding skin so nothing feels floppy. Vary your peel depth slightly, going a touch deeper where you want more light, to give the leaves a little dimension. Clean up any ragged edges with the tip of the knife.

   Refine and even the glow

   Hold a light behind or inside to check for dark patches. Where a spot stays dim, shave a little more rind until the tone matches the rest. Round off sharp inner edges so the light diffuses softly rather than showing hard lines. Aim for a consistent pale gold across the whole figure.

   Light it and photograph

   Cut a small access door in the back or bottom, scoop out enough flesh to thin the front wall from the inside, and drop in a battery LED. Thinning the wall behind the design makes the peeled areas glow brighter. Set it on a porch step at dusk and shoot slightly off to the side to catch the texture. Rub a little petroleum jelly on the peeled areas to slow drying.
