How to carve a leaves pumpkin stencil
Cut each leaf outline through in short strokes, finishing every point from both sides with a craft knife. Scrape the veins from the stem outward. For a swirl of small leaves, keep them at least an inch apart and cut them in a staggered order so no area of the wall is weakened at once.
A leaf pumpkin nestled in a pile of real leaves on the step is the easiest autumn display there is. It fits a Thanksgiving table too.
Questions
Leaves stencil questions
Which leaf stencil is easiest?+
The single large oak leaf. Its rounded lobes are forgiving and it is one opening with scraped veins. Maple leaves take longer because of the sharp points.
How do I carve leaf veins?+
Scrape them. Use a small gouge or the tip of a knife to take off the skin along each vein so it glows softer than the cut-through leaf around it.
How long do leaves pumpkin stencils take to carve?+
Check the individual stencil's carving guide for its time estimate. Preparation, pumpkin size, wall thickness and your experience affect the total; difficulty alone does not determine carving time.
