How to carve a thanksgiving pumpkin stencil
A turkey is a fan of tail feathers behind a round body: cut the feathers as long teardrop openings radiating from the body, leaving spokes of pumpkin between them, then cut the body and head. Cornucopias are best with the horn left uncut and the fruit spilling out cut through. Lettering is scraped.
Thanksgiving pumpkins look right beside mums, cornstalks, and a pile of uncarved gourds. Put one on the table as the centrepiece the night of the dinner.

Carve it no more than a week ahead, keep it out of direct sun, and bring it inside or refrigerate on warm days. Cool November temperatures help; a carved pumpkin can last ten days or more.
How do I carve the turkey's tail feathers?+
Cut each feather as a teardrop opening radiating from the body, and leave spokes of pumpkin between them at least a third of an inch wide. Scrape the fine barbs inside each feather.
