This free Arkansas pumpkin stencil is a printable PDF pattern you can print at home, tape to your pumpkin, and trace. Arkansas's outline has a wide rectangular top with a slightly irregular northern border, then the right side descends in a stair-step pattern where the Mississippi River traces a series of small notches and jogs down to the southeast corner. The bottom edge is straight and the lower-left corner drops into a narrow rectangular peninsula. Carved as a single open shape, the lit pumpkin glows with the complete state silhouette including every river-notch detail. Use a thin saw blade along the right-side Mississippi notches and make each step cut in one clean pass to avoid jagged edges. Use it as a carving template for your Halloween jack-o'-lantern. It is rated Beginner-friendly. Estimated time: 45-60 minutes. Actual time varies with preparation, pumpkin size and experience. Larger shapes and shorter cuts. An adult should handle sharp carving tools.

Frequently asked questions
Can I resize this stencil?βΎ
Yes. The PDF is vector so it scales cleanly. Print the pattern at 100% for a 7 to 10 inch pumpkin, 130% for 11 to 13 inch, or 150% for a giant. Use your printer's "Fit to page" or "Custom scale" setting.
What kind of paper works best?βΎ
Standard 20 lb letter or A4 printer paper is fine. Heavier paper is harder to bend around the pumpkin curve. If your printer supports it, set the quality to 'best' so the lines are crisp.
How long will the carved pumpkin last?βΎ
Usually 5 to 10 days. Coat all cut surfaces with petroleum jelly and store the pumpkin somewhere cool overnight. Avoid direct sun. Battery LED pumpkin lights produce no heat and help it last longer.
Can I sell pumpkins carved with this stencil?βΎ
Yes, the carved pumpkin you make is yours. The license covers personal and small-scale commercial carving (selling carved pumpkins, photographing them, posting on social). You may not resell the PDF file itself.
What if my printer doesn't print the whole stencil?βΎ
Set 'Page scaling' to 'Fit' in the print dialog and uncheck 'Auto-rotate'. If it still cuts off, the design includes 0.25" of safe-area margin so a small crop won't ruin it.
How to carve this stencil
This is a cut-through stencil: the gray areas on the printable pattern are the pieces you remove, and everything white stays attached. The steps below give you the safest carving order. Plan on about 45-60 minutes from print to candle.
Set up first. Print the PDF at 100% scale on letter or A4 paper. Cut the lid at an angle, scoop the pumpkin clean, and thin the carving wall to about 1 inch where the design will sit. Tape the pattern on (snip small darts in the paper so it hugs the curve) and transfer every outline by poking dots along the lines, about one every 1/8 inch. Peel the paper away and carve dot to dot with short, straight strokes.
Carving order
- Start with the Mississippi River edge. Work down the right side first, cutting each small stair-step notch and jog in one clean pass. Saw into every notch corner from both directions instead of turning the blade.
- Cut the corners and irregular edges. Trace the small notched corner at the top right, the slightly wavy northern border, and the little step in the lower left where the border drops before the bottom edge.
- Leave a tab and release the plug. Cut the straight bottom and the left side, leaving a small section on the left edge attached as a tab. Support the large state-shaped plug, cut the tab, and push the piece out from inside the pumpkin.
Clear loose fibers out of each opening as you go, and never twist or pry the blade against the shell; back it out and recut instead. When every piece is out, wipe the cut edges dry and drop in a battery LED puck.

Beginner-friendlyHospital Lights Pumpkin Stencil
A bold medical plus sign glows at the top while a row of small square windows and a larger doorway below turn the pumpkin into a tiny lit-up hospital. Every shape cuts straight through, and the straight-edged squares make this an easy, tidy carve, perfect for healthcare workers or a first-responder porch display. Score each square with a ruler before cutting so the windows line up in a neat row.
Beginner-friendlyFirst Aid Beacon Pumpkin Stencil
A bold plus symbol sits at the center with four round dots anchoring the corners, a clean five-hole design that reads instantly from the street. The cross and dots are all cut straight through, with no fragile details anywhere on the pattern. A great pick for nurses, EMTs, and first-aid fans: use a ruler when transferring the design so the cross arms stay perfectly square.
Beginner-friendlyGalaxy Swirl Pumpkin Stencil
Two sweeping comma-shaped curves swirl around a round central core, suggesting a spiral galaxy spinning across the pumpkin. Just three openings are cut through the wall, so the design comes together quickly yet looks striking and modern when lit. Keep the tapered tails of each curve narrow as you saw; cutting from the wide end toward the thin tip gives you the most control over those graceful points.
Beginner-friendlyFading Moonlight Pumpkin Stencil
A slender crescent moon hangs in the upper corner while a diagonal trail of small round dots falls away beneath it, like fading moonlight. Each shape is pierced through, and the tiny dots do most of the sparkle work against the dark shell. For this easy pattern, punch the dots with an apple corer or drill bit for perfect circles, then saw the thin crescent in two smooth passes.
Beginner-friendlyThe Quiet Gasp Pumpkin Stencil
The most minimalist face possible: two small round eyes and a single oval mouth, placed low on a tall pumpkin so the blank rind above becomes part of the joke. Just three quick cut-through holes and the carve is done, which makes this a genuine five-minute project. Keep the openings small and evenly spaced; on such a spare design, clean placement is what sells the look.
Beginner-friendlyDiamond Cascade Pumpkin Stencil
Four diamonds run in a straight column down the front of the pumpkin, flanked by a staggered row of round dots on each side, turning a tall pumpkin into a modern lantern. All twelve openings are cut through, and their regular spacing is what sells the design. Mark the vertical centerline first and measure each diamond's position before cutting, since even spacing matters more here than fancy knife work.
