The Cross pumpkin stencil is a free printable PDF template. Print it, tape the pattern on, and trace it onto your pumpkin. A large rugged cross pumpkin stencil with slightly tapered arms and a weathered, hand-drawn outline that gives it an organic, aged character rather than a rigid geometric look. The entire cross shape cuts through as a single opening, and because the arms are wide, the resulting jack-o-lantern casts a bold cross-shaped beam of light. A cross this size removes a substantial amount of shell, so thin the interior pumpkin wall to about half an inch before carving to reduce the risk of the outer edges cracking under the weight of the cut. It makes a fun jack-o'-lantern design for Halloween night. It is rated Beginner-friendly. Estimated time: 30-45 minutes. Actual time varies with preparation, pumpkin size and experience. Larger shapes and shorter cuts. An adult should handle sharp carving tools.

Frequently asked questions
Can I resize this stencil?βΎ
Yes. The PDF is vector so it scales cleanly. Print the pattern at 100% for a 7 to 10 inch pumpkin, 130% for 11 to 13 inch, or 150% for a giant. Use your printer's "Fit to page" or "Custom scale" setting.
What kind of paper works best?βΎ
Standard 20 lb letter or A4 printer paper is fine. Heavier paper is harder to bend around the pumpkin curve. If your printer supports it, set the quality to 'best' so the lines are crisp.
How long will the carved pumpkin last?βΎ
Usually 5 to 10 days. Coat all cut surfaces with petroleum jelly and store the pumpkin somewhere cool overnight. Avoid direct sun. Battery LED pumpkin lights produce no heat and help it last longer.
Can I sell pumpkins carved with this stencil?βΎ
Yes, the carved pumpkin you make is yours. The license covers personal and small-scale commercial carving (selling carved pumpkins, photographing them, posting on social). You may not resell the PDF file itself.
What if my printer doesn't print the whole stencil?βΎ
Set 'Page scaling' to 'Fit' in the print dialog and uncheck 'Auto-rotate'. If it still cuts off, the design includes 0.25" of safe-area margin so a small crop won't ruin it.
How to carve this stencil
This is a cut-through stencil: the gray areas on the printable pattern are the pieces you remove, and everything white stays attached. The steps below give you the safest carving order. Plan on about 30-45 minutes from print to candle.
Set up first. Print the PDF at 100% scale on letter or A4 paper. Cut the lid at an angle, scoop the pumpkin clean, and thin the carving wall to about 1 inch where the design will sit. Tape the pattern on (snip small darts in the paper so it hugs the curve) and transfer every outline by poking dots along the lines, about one every 1/8 inch. Peel the paper away and carve dot to dot with short, straight strokes.
Carving order
- Cut the four ragged arm tips. Start with the tapered, weathered tips of the two horizontal arms and the top of the cross. Saw into each point from both sides so the narrow ends do not crack.
- Cut the crossbar. Cut the top and bottom edges of the horizontal arms next, following the wavy hand-drawn line. Keep the saw moving in long, relaxed strokes; the roughness is part of the look.
- Release the tall upright. Cut down both sides of the vertical beam to the tapered base, leaving a small tab attached partway down one side. Support the large plug with one hand, cut the tab, and push the piece out from inside the pumpkin.
Clear loose fibers out of each opening as you go, and never twist or pry the blade against the shell; back it out and recut instead. When every piece is out, wipe the cut edges dry and drop in a battery LED puck.

Beginner-friendlySimple Glowing Cross
A tall Christian cross glows from the center of the pumpkin, with slightly tapered arms that give the shape a hand-hewn, rustic feel. The entire cross is cut through, so candlelight pours out in one bold symbol while the rest of the shell stays untouched. Since this is an easy single-opening design, take the vertical beam in two long, steady strokes and the crossbar last to keep every edge crisp.
IntermediateMorning Light Cross Pumpkin Stencil
A plain cross stands at the center while nine tapered rays of light fan outward around it, like a sunburst breaking through. This shaded design is carved on a continuous wall, shaving the skin away so the cross and rays glow warmly with no pierced openings, which suits a reverent, softer look. Shave the cross to an even depth first, then taper each ray shallower toward its tip so the light appears to fade outward.
IntermediateRadiant Cross Pumpkin Stencil
A bold cross anchors the center of the design while ten tapered rays burst outward around it like beams of light. The cross and every ray are pierced through, leaving dark shell between them that frames the radiating pattern. Cut the large cross first to relieve pressure on the wall, then work each ray from its wide outer end toward the narrow tip so the points finish clean.
IntermediateChapel Windows Pumpkin Stencil
Two crosses stand side by side, each framed beneath its own tall rounded arch like twin chapel windows. The arch outlines and the crosses are cut through the wall as narrow channels, so light traces the frames while the solid rind inside each arch makes the crosses read boldly. At medium difficulty the slim arch bands are the fragile part, so cut them in short segments and leave the interior panels firmly attached.
AdvancedSunburst Cross Pumpkin Stencil
An ornate flared cross stands at the center of an oval field of sunburst rays that radiate outward to the design's edge. It is carved entirely in continuous-wall relief: the cross is left raised with beveled edges while the rays are shaved to alternating depths so light plays across the whole medallion. This hard shading piece rewards patience, so establish the cross outline deep and clean first, then carve every ray from the cross outward to keep the bevels crisp.
AdvancedThree Graves Moon Pumpkin Stencil
A moonlit cemetery scene: a huge glowing full moon fills the background while three headstones stand in silhouette, the tall center marker lettered RIP and flanked by two cross-topped stones rising from tufts of grass. The moon area is cut through and the graves are the pumpkin left in place. This is a hard pattern, so cut the big moon opening in several smaller sections to avoid snapping the thin grass blades along the bottom.
