The I Love West Virginia pumpkin stencil is a free printable PDF template. Print it, tape the pattern on, and trace it onto your pumpkin. This West Virginia pumpkin stencil arranges four chunky shapes in the classic "I heart state" grid: a tall rounded I, a wide heart, and the double abbreviation WV below, every piece carved fully through. The two matching V shapes in WV share a similar silhouette but sit side by side with a narrow gap between them; keep that gap cleanly cut so the two letters read as distinct when lit. A bright LED puck placed low inside the pumpkin casts the WV letters into sharp relief against the glowing heart above. It makes a fun jack-o'-lantern design for Halloween night. It is rated Advanced. Estimated time: 60-90 minutes. Actual time varies with preparation, pumpkin size and experience. Fine details and narrow supports need careful planning. Follow the cutting and shading key in this designβs PDF.

Frequently asked questions
Can I resize this stencil?βΎ
Yes. The PDF is vector so it scales cleanly. Print the pattern at 100% for a 7 to 10 inch pumpkin, 130% for 11 to 13 inch, or 150% for a giant. Use your printer's "Fit to page" or "Custom scale" setting.
What kind of paper works best?βΎ
Standard 20 lb letter or A4 printer paper is fine. Heavier paper is harder to bend around the pumpkin curve. If your printer supports it, set the quality to 'best' so the lines are crisp.
How long will the carved pumpkin last?βΎ
Usually 5 to 10 days. Coat all cut surfaces with petroleum jelly and store the pumpkin somewhere cool overnight. Avoid direct sun. Battery LED pumpkin lights produce no heat and help it last longer.
Can I sell pumpkins carved with this stencil?βΎ
Yes, the carved pumpkin you make is yours. The license covers personal and small-scale commercial carving (selling carved pumpkins, photographing them, posting on social). You may not resell the PDF file itself.
What if my printer doesn't print the whole stencil?βΎ
Set 'Page scaling' to 'Fit' in the print dialog and uncheck 'Auto-rotate'. If it still cuts off, the design includes 0.25" of safe-area margin so a small crop won't ruin it.
How to carve this stencil
This is a cut-through stencil: the gray areas on the printable pattern are the pieces you remove, and everything white stays attached. The steps below give you the safest carving order. Plan on about 60-90 minutes from print to candle.
Set up first. Print the PDF at 100% scale on letter or A4 paper. Cut the lid at an angle, scoop the pumpkin clean, and thin the carving wall to about 1 inch where the design will sit. Tape the pattern on (snip small darts in the paper so it hugs the curve) and transfer every outline by poking dots along the lines, about one every 1/8 inch. Peel the paper away and carve dot to dot with short, straight strokes.
Carving order
- Cut the letter I. Start with the I at the top left. Cut the flared ends first, then the sides, and lift the piece out.
- Cut the W. Cut the W below. It has two deep valleys and a center point; saw into each inside corner from both directions and never twist the blade at the peaks.
- Cut the V. Cut the V beside the W, working down each side toward the bottom point from both directions.
- Release the heart. Finish with the large heart. Cut the top notch from both sides, leave a short tab on one lower edge, then support the heavy plug, cut the tab, and push it out from inside.
Clear loose fibers out of each opening as you go, and never twist or pry the blade against the shell; back it out and recut instead. When every piece is out, wipe the cut edges dry and drop in a battery LED puck.
Tools you'll need
For a advanced carve like this you'll want a fine-detail pumpkin saw, spoon / scoop, pin transfer tool, and small gouge if the pattern includes shading. Here's the kit we reach for, but start with whatever you already own.

AdvancedLOVE Block Pumpkin Stencil
"LOVE" is arranged in a two-by-two block format, with "LO" on the top row and "VE" below, echoing the famous Robert Indiana sculpture. Each letter is cut through in rounded, chunky sans-serif type and the four characters together form a near-square composition. The internal counters of the "O" and the enclosed angle of the "V" need to be freed as islands; carve those interior pieces before removing the surrounding letter bodies so they stay fixed in place by the adjacent wall material.
AdvancedLove Wins Pumpkin Stencil
A large bold heart dominates the design, split horizontally at its midpoint by a band of stencil text that reads "LOVE WINS" in thick block letters. The upper and lower halves of the heart are both pierced through, and the text band bridges the gap so the heart reads as one unified glowing shape when lit. Because the heart's two halves are each large open voids, carve them before the text strip; clearing the big areas first lets you see exactly how much wall support remains around the letter bridges.
AdvancedI Love New Hampshire Pumpkin Stencil
Rated advanced, this New Hampshire pumpkin stencil presents "I [heart] NH" in two rows with oversized block letters. The "N" and "H" are rendered in wide rounded caps: the "N" has a diagonal stroke creating a narrow wedge, while the "H" has a horizontal crossbar suspended between two uprights, leaving two open windows on either side. Tackle the "H" crossbar with plunge cuts at each end before sawing across to prevent the bridge from snapping under blade pressure.
AdvancedI Love Maine Pumpkin Stencil
This Maine pumpkin stencil carves the bold "I [heart] ME" layout made famous by state-pride apparel: a tall serif "I" and a large smooth heart sit above the wide two-letter abbreviation "ME" in chunky rounded type. All four shapes are fully pierced through, so the jack-o-lantern glows with bright, clean cutouts against the orange wall. Because the heart is the largest single opening, carve it last to preserve structural support while you work through the tighter letter forms first.
AdvancedAnatomical Heart Pumpkin Stencil
An anatomical human heart rendered in stylized line art fills this pumpkin stencil, showing the four-chambered organ with aorta and pulmonary artery branching upward and a branching network of vessels spreading across the lower half. The design is built of thick curved channels that are cut through, leaving a web of solid pumpkin bridges between them that hold the composition together. Carve the thinnest branching vessel channels at the base first so you can still brace the pumpkin firmly against those areas before the larger upper artery cuts remove structural mass from the top of the design.
IntermediateTumbling Hearts Pumpkin Stencil
Seven hearts zigzag down the front in an alternating left-right column, with small round dots sprinkled between them for sparkle. Each heart and dot cuts fully through, and the vertical layout is made for tall, skinny pumpkins and gourds. A medium carve mostly for the layout; tape the stencil straight down the tallest face before transferring, and carve from the top heart downward so shavings fall clear of finished cuts.
